What is a children’s school council?

Our School Council are a group of children, elected by their class, who meet termly to discuss issues within the school and the world. There are school councillors in each class.

Why do we have a School Council?

We have a school council to listen to children’s views. We work in partnership with pupils to improve the school. We work in partnership with pupils to improve life experiences for others less fortunate than ourselves either within the school community itself or on a national/ global level. This year we are hoping to develop the role of our councillors so that they have more responsibility around the school and within the wider community.

What have the School Council been doing?

    Term 1:

In Term 1, the School Council supported with a Macmillan Coffee Morning. The children helped to sell a selection of delicious cakes and collect the money raised. The event was organised by Mrs Gething and she raised £261!

    Term 2:

In Term 2, the School Council had the responsibility of raising money for Children in Need. The children were on the playground with buckets collecting money as children arrived for school. Later on in the day, they supported their teachers with a 25-minute sponsored silence. Alongside St Johns, we raised an incredible £1050 for Children in Need!

    Term 3:

The School Council were invited on a special tour of the Houses of Parliament, where they had a truly unforgettable experience. They were given access to areas that are not usually open to the public and even had the opportunity to walk through the House of Commons. It was an amazing day for everyone involved, and the students felt incredibly privileged to witness such an important and historic place up close.

    Term 4:

In term 4, the School Council were given the opportunity to make a difference in the school. They had a budget of £275 to spend on something the whole school could enjoy. After holding a vote, they decided to invest in new comfy furniture for the book nook on the playground, as well as chalkboards for drawing. It has been fantastic to see their ideas come to life, and what an amazing achievement with a positive impact for all.
